Ken Ogata, 1937-2008
Japanese actor Ken Ogata died this Sunday after a battle with liver cancer. The star of several films by Shohei Imamura, including The Ballad of Narayama and Vengeance Is Mine, in which he memorably played charismatic serial killer Iwao Enokizu, Ken Ogata is perhaps best known to American audiences for his searing portrayal of controversial writer Yukio Mishima in Paul Schrader's Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters. Ogata also worked with such other filmmakers as Peter Greenaway, Takashi Miike, and Kinji Fukasaku.
